Laura and I at La Jolla Shores May 2ndA couple weeks ago Julio posted in response to my idea of a spanglish wiki dictionary which I wrote about here. Unfortunately, Julio’s post recieved equally scant interest as my own.

Since a Spanglish Wiktionary would be a time-consuming endeavor to get off the ground and because interest seems to be luke-warm, I’ve given up on the idea for now, but will keep it in mind for the future when someone decides to put 30 hours in a day instead of 24.

a kayaker coming to shore while trolling a fishing lineLaura emailed me this joke a little while ago:

An Italian, Frenchman and a Mexican went for a job interview in England.

Before the interview, they were told that they must compose a sentence in English with three main words: green, pink, and yellow.

The Italian was first: “I wake up in the morning. I see the yellow sun. I see the green grass and I think to myself, I hope it will be a pink day.”

The Frenchman was next: “I wake up in the morning, I eat a yellow banana, a green pepper and in the evening I watch the pink panther on TV.”

Last was the Mexican: “I wake up in the morning, I hear the phone “green…green…”, I pink up the phone and I say “Yellow?”…

One of the things I have started to look forward to on a daily basis is Laura’s phrase or word of the day.

I know I’ve said this before, but our monday through friday morning routine is:

  • 6:30 am our stereo-alarm goes off for the first time playing whatever CD is in there. Usually something relaxing. We turn it off.
  • 6:45 am our stereo-alarm goes off, this time beeping obnoxiously. We get up.
  • 7:25 am after coffee, psuedo-breakfast, and sometimes showers we’re off to La Jolla Highschool where we get to just in time for Crystal to run to first period, her Spanish class
  • 7:50 am I drop Laura off by the McDonalds on Park, in front of City College, where she walks to English Class form
  • 8:00 am - I arrive to Influx Cafe ask for a house coffee for here and a glass of water and sit down on the red sofa to either read, write, or do web design depending on my mood
  • 10:15 am Laura meets me at Influx Cafe and we talk about what happened in her English class

This is the fun part I was telling you about. It’s when Laura excitedly tells me what she learned in class and then starts incorporating it into our ever more frequent conversations in English. Yesterday they went over the difference between “may I” and “can I” - a difference which, I’m pretty sure - doesn’t exist in Spanish. Then - nearly jumping up and down - she said, “oh, and I learned this really cool word: ahsahp”
“ahsahp?” I tried to be enthusiastic too but I had no idea what she was saying. All of a sudden I was worried that she learned a word I didn’t even know.
“Yeah, like can you do this for me ahsahp.”
“Ohh! A.S.A.P. haha, yeah, that’s a good one to know I guess. But, uh, I think more people say Ay Es Ay Pee.”
“Nah, I like ahsahp, it sounds really cool.”
“Haha, yeah, you’re right.”

The rest of the day Laura was asking: “May we go get some food ahsahp?” “May we go to the gym ahsahp?” “Can you teach me how to burn CD’s ahsahp?”

It was endless entertainment for me. I can’t wait to find out what tomorrow’s word of the day is going to be.
